Ancient Japanese Government

In Ancient Japan, the kingdom was organized by clans. The Yamato Clan has ruled over Japan since 250 A.D. The type of rule was monarchy, and an emperor ruled. The emperor owned all the land, and what he said always went his way. If you went against him, you would die. When the emperor died, another member of the Yamato Clan took his place. The new emperor was usually the eldest male in the Yamato Clan. The emperor had special warriors called samurai, which protected the emperor and his estate.

Around A.D. 250, Japan began to use concepts from other countries. From Korea, Japan learned how to create tools and weapons from materials such as bronze and iron. The Japanese learned how to grow rice from Korea, also. In the A.D. 500s, a Japanese ruler began to study Buddhism as well as the culture of China. He sent priests and students to study in China. The Chinese method of government, writing system, and calendar were shared with Japan as an effect of this trade.
